Jannik Sinner continued his strong run at the Italian Open on Tuesday, comfortably defeating fellow Italian Andrea Pellegrino 6-2, 6-3 to reach the next round in Rome. The world No. 1 produced a controlled performance on centre court, never allowing the match to develop into a serious contest.
The victory extends Sinner’s remarkable winning streak in Masters 1000 events to 31 matches, equalling the record set by Novak Djokovic. After the match, Sinner praised his opponent’s effort while expressing satisfaction with his own performance and emphasising the importance of rest ahead of the quarterfinal stage, where he will face Andrey Rublev.
Sinner’s progress came amid major drama elsewhere in the draw, as second seed Alexander Zverev suffered a surprise defeat against Italian wildcard Luciano Darderi. Zverev started strongly but eventually fell 1-6, 7-6 (12-10), 6-0, collapsing in the deciding set as the home crowd roared Darderi to one of the biggest wins of his career.
Darderi described the victory as the most important of his career, marking his first win over a top-10 opponent and sending him into the last eight of the tournament.
Sinner’s dominance and Zverev’s exit have reshaped the tournament picture, especially with Carlos Alcaraz sidelined through injury. With several top contenders eliminated, Sinner has emerged as the clear favourite as he chases a sixth consecutive Masters 1000 title and a historic home victory, which would make him the first Italian winner in Rome since Adriano Panatta five decades ago.
Elsewhere, Norway’s Casper Ruud advanced after Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti was forced to retire due to injury while trailing 6-3, 6-1. Musetti, visibly struggling with a thigh issue, is now uncertain for Roland Garros after dropping out of the top 10 rankings.
Ruud will next face Karen Khachanov, who also progressed after defeating Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic in straight sets, ending the young player’s impressive run that included a shock win over Novak Djokovic earlier in the tournament.
