Jannik Sinner Advances at Wimbledon as Grigor Dimitrov Retires Injured; Novak Djokovic Breaks "Curse" in Comeback Win

Posted : 08 July 2025

Jannik Sinner expressed mixed emotions after reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals following a heartbreaking end to his match against Grigor Dimitrov. The world number one was trailing by two sets when Dimitrov, visibly in pain, was forced to retire. The Bulgarian, seeded 19th, clutched his right pectoral muscle and was unable to continue after a brief medical timeout. This marked Dimitrov’s fifth consecutive Grand Slam where injury forced him to withdraw.

Despite becoming only the ninth man in the Open era to reach seven consecutive Grand Slam quarter-finals, Sinner found little joy in the advancement. Instead, his focus was on Dimitrov’s wellbeing after the emotional conclusion. After helping Dimitrov off the court, Sinner told the crowd, “I don’t take this as a win at all; it’s a very unfortunate moment for all of us to witness.” He praised Dimitrov’s dedication and hard work, adding, “We all wish him only the best,” and called on spectators to applaud Dimitrov and his team.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic overcame a challenging match against Australia’s Alex de Minaur to secure his place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals. The 38-year-old Serbian, who is chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title, lost the first set heavily but mounted a comeback to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Djokovic faced a daunting task, especially playing in front of former rival Roger Federer, who watched from the Royal Box.

Reflecting on the match, Djokovic said, “This is probably the first time Federer is watching me and I have won the match! The last couple of times I lost, so it’s good to break the curse.” He expressed respect for Federer, calling him a “huge champion” and reminisced about sharing the stage with him over the years. Djokovic will next face Italian Flavio Cobolli for a place in the semi-finals, where he could meet Jannik Sinner.
