Sinner, Musetti Shine at Italian Open as Alcaraz Advances

Posted : 14 May 2025

Jannik Sinner passed a crucial test in his comeback from a doping suspension with a straight-sets victory over Francisco Cerundolo at the Italian Open, advancing to the quarterfinals. The world No. 1 triumphed 7-6 (7/2), 6-3 in a match that was delayed by heavy rain for several hours. This win set up a quarterfinal clash against either Casper Ruud or Jaume Munar.

Sinner’s performance marks a significant milestone in his return to competitive tennis, following a three-month suspension imposed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) due to two positive tests for clostebol.

Cerundolo had defeated Sinner in the last 16 at the Italian Open in 2023, but the 23-year-old Italian has grown into a more formidable player since then, becoming a consistent tournament winner. Despite the setback in the first set, where Cerundolo put up a strong fight, Sinner held his composure and won the tie-break with ease.

From that point, he dominated the second set, winning four consecutive games to seal the match and keep alive his hopes for a first Italian Open title.

The victory marks Sinner’s first tournament since his suspension ended in February, and he is now focusing on the upcoming French Open. Despite the challenges, Sinner is starting to regain the form that helped him capture three Grand Slam titles and win last year's ATP Finals. His eyes are now set on continuing his strong form through Rome and into the French Open later this month.

In other matches, Lorenzo Musetti also advanced to the Italian Open quarterfinals after a dramatic rain delay that postponed his match for nearly three hours. Musetti defeated Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-4 and will face either Alexander Zverev or Jack Draper in the next round.

However, due to a right arm injury, Musetti has been forced to withdraw from his doubles campaign with Lorenzo Sonego. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz had to fight hard to overcome Karen Khachanov 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, setting up a quarterfinal clash with Jack Draper. Alcaraz is aiming for a top-two seeding at the French Open, with a strong showing in Rome crucial for his goal.
