Sinner Draws Jarry as Australian Open Defense Begins

Posted : 09 January 2025

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is set to begin his Australian Open title defense against powerful Chilean Nicolas Jarry. Sinner, who clinched his maiden Grand Slam in Melbourne last year by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final, went on to secure the US Open and ATP Finals titles in a stellar season.

However, his preparations have been overshadowed by a doping controversy after testing positive for traces of clostebol earlier in the year. While the International Tennis Integrity Agency cleared him of any wrongdoing, an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency remains unresolved.

The Italian star, seeded first, faces a challenging path ahead. He could encounter Stefanos Tsitsipas or Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals, with Daniil Medvedev as a potential semifinal opponent.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, seeking his 11th Australian Open title and a record 25th Grand Slam, opens his campaign against American wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy. Djokovic’s draw positions him to face Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round and a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash with Spain's Carlos Alcaraz. If he advances, a semifinal battle with Alexander Zverev may await.

In the women’s draw, World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka begins her title defense against former US Open champion Sloane Stephens. The Belarusian, aiming to become the first woman since Martina Hingis to win three consecutive Australian Open titles, faces a tough road.

Second seed Iga Swiatek opens against Katerina Siniakova, with Elena Rybakina and Emma Navarro lurking in her half of the draw. Coco Gauff, seeded third, faces a challenging opener against 2020 Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin. Notably, Naomi Osaka is set for a rematch against Caroline Garcia, who defeated her in the first round last year. The tournament kicks off Sunday, promising high-stakes matches across the board.
