Sinner, Alcaraz Cruise into Qatar Open Quarter‑Finals

Posted : 19 February 2026

At the ATP 500 event in Doha, the men’s draw stayed on course for a blockbuster later‑round clash as world number two Jannik Sinner and world number one Carlos Alcaraz moved into the quarter‑finals on Wednesday. Sinner, playing solid tennis throughout, secured a 6‑3, 7‑5 win against Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in the second round.

The Italian displayed control from the baseline and served strongly, denying Popyrin any break‑point opportunities as he wrapped up his victory in straight sets.

Alcaraz, in his first major tournament since completing the career Grand Slam at the Australian Open, also progressed without dropping a set. The Spaniard overcame France’s Valentin Royer 6‑2, 7‑5, recovering from a 5‑2 deficit in the second set by winning five games in succession to close out the match.

Alcaraz’s performance marked another confident step in his hard‑court season, extending his unbeaten run at the start of the year.

Both top seeds will now face new challenges in the quarter‑finals. Sinner is slated to meet sixth seed Jakub Mensik, while Alcaraz is set to take on seventh seed Karen Khachanov, who prevailed in his own three‑set last‑16 encounter.

The continued progress of these two rivals sets up a tantalising potential final in Doha, a repeat of the high‑stakes meetings that have defined much of their 2025 and early‑2026 seasons.

The day’s action also included other notable results, with Stefanos Tsitsipas upsetting former champion Daniil Medvedev and several seeds advancing, ensuring a competitive quarter‑final lineup.
