Sinner, Alcaraz Begin Clay Season with Dominant Wins at Monte Carlo

Posted : 07 April 2026

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz kicked off their clay-court seasons with impressive second-round victories at the Monte Carlo Masters, keeping their rivalry for the world number one ranking alive.

Sinner, fresh from completing the Sunshine Double without dropping a set, overpowered Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-3 6-0 in just 64 minutes, dropping only six points in the second set.

This marked his 18th consecutive Masters 1000 win and 36th straight set victory at that level.

A tournament victory in Monaco would see Sinner surpass Alcaraz to claim the world number one ranking when the updated standings are released on Monday.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz, the defending champion, responded with a 6-1 6-3 win over Argentina’s Sebastian Baez in 70 minutes.

This was Alcaraz’s first clay match since his dramatic French Open triumph over Sinner last year, where he recovered from two sets down and saved three championship points.

Despite acknowledging the possibility of losing his top ranking, Alcaraz emphasized his focus on adjusting to clay: "For me the number one spot is not in my mind right now. I'm just trying to feel the best way on clay courts and let's see how the clay swing goes." The gap between the two players has narrowed to 1,190 points as the European clay-court season progresses.

Sinner has no points to defend until the Italian Open in May due to a suspension last year, meaning he could gain a significant ranking advantage if he reaches at least the semi-finals in Monte Carlo and outperforms Alcaraz.

Sinner will meet Argentine Francisco Cerundolo next, while Alcaraz will face either Tomas Martin Etcheverry or France’s Terence Atmane in his upcoming match.
