Jannik Sinner continued his dominant run at the Italian Open by sweeping aside Alexei Popyrin in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-0 to reach the last 16 in Rome. The world No. 1 took just over an hour to secure his 25th consecutive victory, extending his impressive form on the ATP Tour.
Sinner will now face compatriot Andrea Pellegrino in an all-Italian clash in the next round. Pellegrino, ranked 155 in the world and competing as a qualifier, pulled off a surprise win over 20th seed Frances Tiafoe to reach this stage of the tournament for the first time in a Masters 1000 main draw.
The top-ranked Italian is chasing his first title in Rome and a potential historic achievement, as no Italian has won the tournament since Adriano Panatta 50 years ago. His victory also moves him closer to completing a full set of Masters 1000 titles.
Against Popyrin, Sinner was in complete control, forcing errors and breaking serve multiple times as the Australian struggled to cope with his intensity. The match was one-sided throughout, highlighting Sinner’s current dominance in men’s tennis.
Elsewhere in the women’s draw, Coco Gauff overcame a major scare to reach the quarterfinals after defeating fellow American Iva Jovic 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 in a hard-fought contest lasting nearly three hours.
Gauff, the reigning French Open champion, saved match point in the second set before turning the match around with renewed aggression and resilience. Despite earlier struggles on clay this season, she managed to regroup and secure victory.
The 22-year-old will now face rising star Mirra Andreeva in the last eight as she continues her bid for another strong run in Rome.
