Star Contender India Day 3: Shah‑Chitale, Bhattacharjee Advance and Mixed Doubles Prospects Grow

Posted : 13 February 2026

Day 3 of the World Table Tennis (WTT) Star Contender India in Chennai delivered key breakthroughs for the host nation’s paddlers as the event built toward its later rounds. The tournament continues to showcase rising talents and competitive matchups from the world stage across singles and doubles disciplines.

India’s top‑seeded mixed doubles team of Manush Shah and Diya Chitale pulled off a hard‑fought victory to advance to the mixed doubles quarterfinals. The pair, who recently claimed the WTT Contender Muscat title, were pushed to the brink by Korean qualifiers and had to save three match points before emerging 3‑2 (10‑12, 11‑6, 12‑10, 5‑11, 12‑10) in a marathon 42‑minute encounter, keeping their bid for glory alive.

Meanwhile in the singles competition, 19‑year‑old Ankur Bhattacharjee made a statement on the big stage by defeating French World Championships doubles medallist Florian Bourrassaud 3‑1 (11‑5, 11‑8, 3‑11, 11‑9) in the opening round. Bhattacharjee, who came through qualifying, will next face 14th seed Kazuhiro Yoshimura of Japan in the second round, marking a significant step in his tour progression.

The mixed doubles and singles results reflect a strong Indian presence at the WTT Star Contender event, with home favourites demonstrating resilience and competitive edge against international opponents. As the tournament advances, all eyes will be on how these performances shape the quarterfinal lineups and whether India’s contingent can convert early momentum into deeper runs.
