Seun Ogunsakin Set for Third Consecutive Grand Slam Appearance at US Open

Nigeria’s teenage tennis prospect Seun Ogunsakin is set to make his third consecutive Grand Slam appearance when he begins his campaign at the US Open Junior Tennis Championships in New York. The 17-year-old is scheduled to compete in the qualifying rounds at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.

Ogunsakin has enjoyed a breakthrough season on the international junior circuit. His Grand Slam run began at Roland Garros, where he recorded a victory in the boys’ singles qualifying event before continuing his push for a place among the leading junior players.

The Nigerian then produced his biggest Grand Slam performance at Wimbledon. He became the first Nigerian in 36 years to compete in the boys’ singles main draw at the tournament, although his campaign ended in the opening round against Britain’s Oliver Page.

Ogunsakin made an even bigger impact in the doubles competition at the All England Club. Partnering Botswana’s Ntungamili Raguin, he reached the semi-finals after defeating several established pairings, including the sixth seeds in the quarter-finals.

The African partnership eventually bowed out in the semi-finals after a closely contested match against Brazil’s Luis Guto Miguel and Slovenia’s Žiga Šeško. Their run nevertheless marked a historic achievement for both players and highlighted Ogunsakin’s growing presence on the international stage.

Ogunsakin’s progress has also received recognition from Nigeria’s tennis administrators. Nigeria Tennis Federation President Victor Ochei praised the teenager and Esther Adesina after their Wimbledon performances, describing their achievements as evidence of determination, ambition and resilience.

His development has also been supported by efforts to increase junior tennis opportunities in Nigeria. National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko previously cited Ogunsakin’s run in the Junior French Open qualifying rounds and his Wimbledon qualification as examples of what Nigerian youngsters can achieve with the right support.

The US Open now presents another opportunity for the teenager to strengthen his reputation. Starting in qualifying means Ogunsakin will need to win his opening matches to secure another place in a Grand Slam junior main draw.

His appearance in New York will also extend an impressive sequence of major tournament appearances. After Roland Garros and Wimbledon, Ogunsakin will now seek another breakthrough at the final junior Grand Slam of the 2026 season.
