Serena Williams' Wimbledon Comeback Ends as Iga Swiatek Survives Opening Test

Posted : 01 July 2026

Serena Williams's long-awaited return to singles action at The Championships, Wimbledon came to a disappointing end as the American icon was defeated by Australia's Maya Joint in the opening round. Playing her first singles match in four years, Williams was beaten 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3, bringing an end to hopes of a memorable comeback at the All England Club.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion's return had generated excitement across the tennis world, with fans eager to see one of the sport's greatest players back on one of her favourite stages. Although Williams showed resilience by forcing a deciding set after winning the second-set tiebreak, Joint held her nerve to claim one of the biggest victories of her career and prevent a fairytale ending to the veteran's comeback.

Meanwhile, defending champion Iga Świątek avoided a major upset after overcoming a determined challenge from American Taylor Townsend. The world No. 3 made a dominant start by taking the opening set 6-1 before Townsend fought back to level the contest with a 6-2 second-set victory.

Świątek regained control in the deciding set, eventually sealing a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory after surviving a tense opening game that lasted more than 20 minutes. The six-time Grand Slam champion appeared visibly emotional after converting match point, reflecting the relief of successfully navigating a difficult opening-round test.

The Polish star admitted recent results had dented her confidence, revealing she had struggled in three-set matches throughout the season. She said defending her Wimbledon title carries extra pressure but was pleased with the composure she showed when it mattered most.

Świątek's victory sets up a second-round meeting with former Wimbledon finalist Karolína Plíšková, as she continues her bid to retain the title and add another Grand Slam trophy to her collection.
