Serena Williams is set to make her return to Wimbledon for the first time since 2022 after being awarded a wildcard entry to compete in the women’s doubles alongside her sister Venus Williams.
The American tennis icon recently signaled her comeback to competitive tennis when she featured at Queen’s Club, winning her opening doubles match with partner Victoria Mboko. It marked her first professional appearance in four years following her decision to step away from the sport after the 2022 US Open.
The 44-year-old 23-time Grand Slam singles champion had previously said she was “evolving away” from tennis but has now returned, reportedly motivated by the opportunity to play in front of her two young daughters. Her comeback announcement came shortly before the Queen’s warm-up event.
Her return to competitive action has been gradual, though her run at Queen’s was cut short after Mboko withdrew due to injury. Despite that setback, Serena is expected to continue her comeback at the Berlin Open, where she is set to compete in doubles alongside Karolina Muchova.
The Williams sisters remain one of the most successful doubles partnerships in tennis history, having won six Wimbledon titles together. Their last triumph at the All England Club came a decade ago, and their reunion has generated significant excitement among fans.
Although there had been speculation that Serena might also feature in the Wimbledon singles draw, she was not included in the wildcard entries for the main singles competition. With no current ranking after her long absence from the tour, she relies on wildcard invitations to enter events.
One singles wildcard for Wimbledon is still yet to be announced, but Serena’s confirmed return will come in the doubles event, where she will once again partner with her sister on one of tennis’s biggest stages.
