Serena Williams handed Wimbledon wildcard for 2026 championships

Posted : 22 June 2026

Serena Williams has been given a wildcard entry for the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, paving the way for her return to the grass-court Grand Slam starting next week.

Tournament organisers confirmed on Sunday that the 44-year-old American legend is among the players granted entry into the ladies’ singles draw. Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, has not played a singles match since the 2022 US Open, when she stepped away from professional tennis.

The announcement was also shared on Wimbledon’s official social media channels, featuring an image of Williams on grass courts with the caption “Serena returns,” alongside the message confirming her wildcard inclusion.

Although she has been retired from full-time competition since 2022, Williams has made recent appearances in doubles events. She played at Queen’s Club alongside Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, where they recorded a win over a seeded pair before Mboko’s injury ended their run. She also featured at the Berlin Open with Czech player Karolina Muchova, where they exited in the opening round.

Williams has also been awarded a wildcard for the Wimbledon women’s doubles event, where she is expected to reunite with her sister Venus Williams. The pair are six-time Wimbledon doubles champions, with their last title at the All England Club coming ten years ago.

Her return adds major anticipation to this year’s tournament as one of tennis’ greatest players prepares for a competitive comeback on the sport’s biggest stage.
