Serena Williams Embraces Emotional Wimbledon Return After Four-Year Absence

Posted : 30 June 2026

Serena Williams is back at Wimbledon, but the tennis icon says both she and the tournament feel different from the last time she competed on the famous grass courts. Four years after her final singles appearance, the 44-year-old is preparing for an emotional return that represents far more than another match.

Williams last played at Wimbledon when she exited Centre Court following a defeat to Harmony Tan. Since then, her life has undergone major changes away from professional tennis. She welcomed a second daughter, became a co-owner of a National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) club, and even made a memorable appearance during the Super Bowl halftime show.

Returning to the All England Club has reminded Williams how much time has passed. While some familiar faces remain, new players now dominate the practice courts, and even parts of the venue have changed enough that she briefly lost her way while heading to the media centre.

Her comeback match will see her face 20-year-old Maya Joint on Centre Court, marking Williams' first Wimbledon singles appearance in 1,396 days. The contest also highlights the passing of generations, with her opponent being 24 years younger than the seven-time Wimbledon singles champion.

Despite the anticipation surrounding her return, Williams insists that the result is not her primary focus. She views simply stepping onto Centre Court again as an achievement she once believed might never happen.

Speaking in an interview with Clare Balding for BBC Television, Williams described her return as both familiar and completely new. Staying in the same house she used during previous Wimbledon campaigns has brought back memories, but she also recognizes how much her life has evolved. She believes embracing change has been a positive experience.

Rather than setting expectations based on victories, Williams says her goal is to enjoy the occasion, follow her coach's game plan, and compete with discipline. After everything she has experienced since leaving Wimbledon four years ago, she considers her presence on the court to be a success in itself.
