Serena Williams has clarified that she has no intention of returning to professional tennis, despite her recent registration with the sport’s anti-doping agency sparking speculation about a potential comeback.
The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion has not played competitively since a third-round loss at the 2022 US Open, leaving her just one title shy of the all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles wins held by Margaret Court in women’s tennis and Novak Djokovic in men’s tennis.
Adrian Bassett, spokesperson for the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), confirmed Williams’s registration in the sport’s testing pool, telling AFP: “It is correct that she is back on the Registered Testing Pool list. At this stage, we have no other information.”
However, Williams took to social media to dismiss the comeback rumors, posting on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday: “Omg yall I'm NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.”
Following her defeat to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic at the 2022 US Open, Williams explained that she was not retiring from tennis in the traditional sense, but instead “evolving” away from the sport.
Athletes who re-enter the testing pool must provide their whereabouts for sample collection and complete six months of testing before becoming eligible to compete again.
Serena’s sister, Venus Williams, who has won seven major singles titles, made her own return to the WTA Tour in July at the age of 45 after nearly two years away. At the time, Venus expressed her wish that Serena might join her on tour once more.
Together, the Williams sisters have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals. Venus reflected on their partnership, saying, “I keep saying to my team: The only thing that would make this better is if she was here. We always did everything together, so of course I miss her. But if she comes back, I’m sure she’ll let y’all know.”
