Sabalenka vs Osaka Set for Blockbuster French Open Night Clash as Men’s Draw Opens Up

Posted : 01 June 2026

Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka are set for a marquee showdown in the first women’s night session at the French Open in three years on Monday, highlighting a day filled with high-stakes fourth-round matches in Paris.

World number one Sabalenka continues her pursuit of a first Roland Garros title after falling narrowly short in last year’s final against Coco Gauff. She now faces a dangerous test in Osaka, who has rediscovered form and reached the last 16 in Paris for the first time in her career.

This will be only the fourth meeting between the two Grand Slam champions, all previously coming at the last-16 stage of major tournaments. Osaka won their first encounter during her 2018 US Open title run, while Sabalenka has since responded with two victories, including wins at Indian Wells and Madrid earlier this season.

The winner of Monday’s clash will move on to face either former Australian Open champion Madison Keys or Russia’s Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals. Sabalenka praised Osaka’s return to form, noting her improvement since returning to the tour after maternity leave, and described their matches as highly competitive and enjoyable.

Osaka, who took a break from tennis in 2023 following the birth of her daughter, has gradually rebuilt her level and reached the US Open semifinals last year. She has also expressed a clear ambition to improve her performances on clay and grass, aiming to extend her run in Paris beyond the early rounds for the first time.

The Japanese star has also attracted attention for her distinctive gold-themed outfit in Paris, inspired by the Eiffel Tower at night, though she hinted she may change her look for the night session.

Elsewhere in the women’s draw, local hope Diane Parry continues her campaign against Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska, while Austria’s Anastasia Potapova looks to build on her shock win over defending champion Coco Gauff as she faces Anna Kalinskaya.

In the men’s draw, the tournament has opened up significantly following early exits from several top names. World number six Felix Auger-Aliassime is now the highest-ranked player remaining in the top half and will attempt to reach his first French Open quarterfinal when he meets Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo.

The shock defeat of top seed Jannik Sinner has reshaped the competition, with players like Zachary Svajda acknowledging the opportunity but stressing the importance of staying focused match by match. Svajda now faces Italy’s Flavio Cobolli after securing just his second Grand Slam win before the tournament.

Former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini is also aiming for a long-awaited Grand Slam quarterfinal return as he takes on Juan Manuel Cerundolo, while Frances Tiafoe meets Matteo Arnaldi in another all-important fourth-round clash.

With big names falling and new contenders emerging, the French Open remains wide open heading into a pivotal week in Paris.
