Sabalenka, Paolini Power into French Open Third Round with Commanding Wins

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the third round of the French Open with a dominant performance over Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann. Despite a brief setback early in the match when she lost her serve, the Belarusian quickly regained control, stringing together five consecutive games to secure the opening set. Her aggressive play continued in the second, where she struck 17 winners compared to just two from her opponent, sealing a 6-3, 6-1 victory in 79 minutes.

 

Following the match, Sabalenka acknowledged the challenge posed by Teichmann, praising her for making every point a battle. The three-time Grand Slam champion, who has emerged as one of the favourites in Paris, now looks ahead to a third-round clash against Serbia’s Olga Danilovic, who edged past American Danielle Collins in three sets.

 

In other action, last year’s French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini continued her impressive form by defeating Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia 6-3, 6-3. The Italian, riding high after a WTA 1,000 title win in Rome, extended her winning streak to eight matches. Paolini has had a breakout 2024, reaching finals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and capturing Olympic doubles gold with Sara Errani.

 

Reflecting on her comfort level at the venue, Paolini expressed how familiar the Philippe Chatrier court now feels after multiple appearances, including the Olympics. With her confidence growing and strong crowd support behind her, she will next face Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva as she aims for another deep run in Paris.
