Sabalenka Moves Past Australian Open Heartbreak with Indian Wells Victory

Posted : 10 March 2025

Aryna Sabalenka admitted that the disappointment of missing out on a third consecutive Australian Open title had been difficult to overcome, but she felt her mindset was improving after her second-round victory at Indian Wells.

The world No. 1 had an emotional reaction following her loss to Madison Keys in Melbourne, smashing her racket and breaking down in tears. Struggling to move past the defeat, she suffered early exits in Qatar and Dubai, but she looked dominant in her latest match, overpowering McCartney Kessler without facing a single break point.

Reflecting on her struggles, Sabalenka acknowledged that she had been consumed by thoughts of her Australian Open final loss, which affected her performances in the following tournaments. She admitted that dwelling on the match had been a mistake, but she viewed it as a necessary experience for growth.

Now, she feels she has moved past the disappointment and is focused on the future, learning valuable lessons from the setback. With a positive outlook, she hopes to avoid a similar situation and approach upcoming matches with a fresh mindset.

Indian Wells, where she was a finalist last year, has provided Sabalenka with the ideal environment to reset. She considers the tournament as significant as a Grand Slam, especially given its back-to-back scheduling with the Miami Open.

The Belarusian enjoys competing in Indian Wells and believes the event offers a less mentally taxing challenge. Looking ahead, she will face Italian Lucia Bronzetti in the third round as she aims to build momentum and regain top form.
