Sabalenka Holds Off Mboko to Reach Indian Wells Semis as Swiatek Exits

Aryna Sabalenka survived a stern test from Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko to keep her Indian Wells title hopes alive, winning 7-6 (7-0) 6-4 in a match that showcased the young Canadian’s potential. Mboko challenged the world number one in the first set, pushing it to a tie-break, but Sabalenka dominated the tie-break and then broke serve in the fifth game of the second set to seal victory.

After the match, Sabalenka praised Mboko’s courage and skill, describing her as “a future Grand Slam champion” and highlighting the fearless style of the new generation of players.

Sabalenka, a two-time runner-up at Indian Wells, will meet 14th seed Linda Noskova in the semi-finals. Noskova reached the last four after defeating Australian qualifier Talia Gibson 6-2 4-6 6-2. Gibson, ranked 112th and competing in her first WTA 1,000 main draw, had made history by becoming the first qualifier in 11 years to reach the quarter-finals after upsetting seventh seed Jasmine Paolini.

Meanwhile, two-time Indian Wells champion Iga Swiatek was eliminated by Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in a three-set match, 6-2 4-6 6-4. Svitolina took advantage of a series of double faults to claim the opening set before Swiatek fought back to force a decider.

However, the ninth seed secured a crucial break in the final set to advance to her first semi-final at the tournament in seven years. Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina also progressed, defeating Jessica Pegula 6-1 7-6 (7-4) and setting up a semi-final clash with Svitolina.

The results set up intriguing semi-final matchups at Indian Wells, with Sabalenka facing Noskova and Svitolina taking on Rybakina, while Mboko’s performance confirms her status as one of the sport’s most promising young talents.
