Sabalenka, Gauff Set to Clash in Historic French Open Women’s Final

Posted : 07 June 2025

For the first time in seven years, the top two women’s tennis players will face off in a Grand Slam final, as Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff prepare to meet at the French Open. This clash guarantees a new champion, with world number one Sabalenka aiming for her fourth major singles title, while second-ranked Gauff seeks her second.

Gauff, who won the US Open in 2023 and was runner-up in Paris three years ago, will face Sabalenka, making her Roland Garros final debut after winning two Australian Opens and last year’s US Open.

The two players have a balanced rivalry, each holding five wins from their ten previous encounters. Their showdown on Court Philippe Chatrier carries high stakes: the winner will take home €2.5 million and 2,000 ranking points.

Sabalenka asserted her status as the favorite by defeating four-time champion Iga Swiatek in a tough three-set semi-final, ending Swiatek’s 26-match winning streak. Gauff, facing a supportive crowd for her opponent, efficiently defeated French wildcard Lois Boisson in straight sets to reach her first French Open final.

Sabalenka’s consistent top-level performance continues, marking her third consecutive Grand Slam final—a feat last achieved by Serena Williams nine years ago. This year alone, Sabalenka has reached seven finals out of ten tournaments and leads the WTA with 40 wins from 46 matches.

Gauff, meanwhile, has established herself as a strong contender on clay, becoming the youngest woman to reach the finals of Madrid, Rome, and the French Open in the same year. Her run also made her the youngest player to reach 70 Grand Slam match wins since Maria Sharapova in 2007.
