Sabalenka Feeling Fresh Ahead of China Open After Losing World No. 1 Ranking

The four-time Grand Slam champion spent 99 weeks at the top of the WTA rankings before Rybakina took over following her victory over Sabalenka in the US Open final. Sabalenka has not won a title since March and will finish the season without a major trophy for the first time since 2022.

Speaking ahead of the China Open in Beijing, Sabalenka said her limited match schedule had left her feeling refreshed. The Belarusian added that her run at the US Open helped her regain confidence and rediscover her enjoyment of tennis after struggling physically and mentally during the middle part of the season.

Sabalenka is seeded second in Beijing behind newly crowned world No. 1 Rybakina. The 2026 China Open women's main draw begins on September 30, with Sabalenka set to face either Hungary's Anna Bondar or Mexico's Renata Zarazua in the opening round.

Last year's champion Amanda Anisimova is also listed in the tournament field, while Sabalenka's fellow Grand Slam stars will feature in a strong WTA 1000 lineup.

On the men's side, Novak Djokovic returns to Beijing after an 11-year absence. The 24-time Grand Slam champion has won the China Open six times and holds a perfect 29-0 singles record at the tournament, where he will begin against Portugal's Nuno Borges.
