Rybakina Dominates Jones; Raducanu Overcomes Serve Struggles to Advance at Australian Open

Posted : 14 January 2025

Elena Rybakina, the former Wimbledon champion, delivered a commanding performance against 16-year-old Australian Emerson Jones, winning their Australian Open first-round match 6-1, 6-1. The Kazakh sixth seed showcased her experience and skill by dominating the match in just 53 minutes, hitting 11 aces and 26 winners.

Although Jones, ranked the world junior number one, showed promise with a few break points at 5-1 down, Rybakina quickly regained control to seal the win. Rybakina expressed confidence in her performance, noting that Jones has a bright future ahead.

Rybakina had done her homework on Jones, watching her previous matches to adjust her strategy. Despite her solid victory, she acknowledged the teenager's potential and emphasized that it took her a couple of games to adjust to Jones' playing style.

Rybakina had made headlines before the tournament for seeking to bring her former coach Stefano Vukov back into her team, though Vukov is currently under suspension due to accusations of abusive behavior. Rybakina defended him, stating that he had never mistreated her.

Meanwhile, Emma Raducanu advanced to the second round despite struggling with her serve. The 22-year-old Brit, who has been sidelined by injuries, faced Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova and won 7-6(4), 7-6(2). Raducanu struggled with 15 double faults during the match, with her serve misfiring at crucial points.

She admitted that she couldn't pinpoint what went wrong but managed to maintain composure despite the difficulties. Raducanu relied on her strong returns and mental resilience to secure the win, despite the inconsistency with her serve.

Raducanu, who has had a challenging year with injuries, was pleased to grind out the victory and stay focused on other aspects of her game. She will now face 23-year-old American Amanda Anisimova in the next round, a player known for her powerful ball-striking. Raducanu is aware of the challenge ahead, having practiced with Anisimova before, and looks forward to the upcoming match as an opportunity to showcase her skills.
