Rybakina Begins US Open Campaign With Win as World No. 1 Race Heats Up

Elena Rybakina made a confident return to action at the US Open, defeating 17-year-old wildcard Thea Frodin 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round. The second seed showed no obvious signs of the injury that forced her to retire from her Cincinnati quarter-final against Iga Swiatek and progressed comfortably after a rain delay.

Rybakina entered the tournament just 434 points behind world number one Aryna Sabalenka and knows she can claim the top ranking for the first time by reaching the semi-finals, even if Sabalenka successfully defends her title. She could also move to No. 1 if Sabalenka, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula all fail to win the tournament.

The 27-year-old remained cautious about her fitness, saying she intends to assess her condition gradually after spending time away from tennis following her Cincinnati injury. Her next opponent will be Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who advanced after beating Darja Vidmanova.

Frodin, meanwhile, showed flashes of her potential despite the defeat, hitting 11 aces in her Grand Slam main-draw debut. The American teenager, who previously served as a young Serena Williams' body double in King Richard, earned her wildcard by winning the USTA Girls' 18s National Championships.
