Casper Ruud advanced to the semifinals of the Madrid Open after defeating Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-5 on Thursday. This victory marked Ruud’s first win over the Russian, with the Norwegian having previously been defeated in their three prior encounters.
Ruud’s strong performance on clay was key to his success, despite only converting two of his eight break points. Medvedev, who has struggled on the surface, failed to break Ruud's serve during the match.
Ruud’s dominance began in the first set, where he broke Medvedev in the fourth game and successfully served to close it out. The second set saw a more competitive exchange, but Ruud capitalized on his single break point in the 11th game, which proved enough to seal the match.
Medvedev, on the other hand, struggled with consistency, committing 33 unforced errors and four double faults.
With this win, Ruud, who is ranked 15th, is set to face either Francisco Cerundolo or Jakub Mensik in the semifinals. In other quarterfinal matches, fifth seed Jack Draper will play Matteo Arnaldi, and Lorenzo Musetti will face Gabriel Diallo.
On the women’s side, the WTA 1000 semifinals feature defending champion Iga Swiatek against Coco Gauff, and Aryna Sabalenka facing the in-form Elina Svitolina.
