Roger Federer to Headline “Battle of the World No. 1s” at 2026 Australian Open Opening Ceremony

Posted : 12 December 2025

Roger Federer is set to make a highly anticipated return to Rod Laver Arena in January, headlining a “Battle of the World No. 1s” to officially launch the 2026 Australian Open.

This will mark his first appearance at the venue since retiring in 2022, as Melbourne Park introduces its inaugural opening ceremony for the Grand Slam.

The event, scheduled for the evening before the tournament begins on January 18, will include a tribute to Federer, who claimed the Norman Brookes trophy six times as part of his 20 Grand Slam titles.

Federer will also take part in a star-studded exhibition match alongside four-time Australian Open champion Andre Agassi, as well as Australians Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt.

Reflecting on his connection to the tournament, Federer said, “It feels like a lifetime ago that I coined the phrase the ‘Happy Slam’ for the Australian Open, and it still makes me smile when I think about all the moments I’ve had there. I’ve experienced so many emotions on Rod Laver Arena – the joy of lifting the trophy six times, the honour of playing in front of Rod Laver himself, the challenge of competing against my biggest rivals, and always the overwhelming love and support of the Australian fans.”

Federer highlighted some of his most cherished memories Down Under, including his victories in 2017 and 2018, as well as earlier triumphs in 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2010.

The opening ceremony promises to celebrate his remarkable career and provide fans with a unique and unforgettable experience.
