Richard Gasquet Bids Farewell to Tennis After Roland Garros Defeat to Jannik Sinner

Posted : 30 May 2025

Jannik Sinner’s dominant straight-sets victory over Richard Gasquet at Roland Garros not only showcased the world number one's form but also marked the end of an era for French tennis. The 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 result served as the final chapter in Gasquet’s long and storied career, bringing down the curtain on a player who had captivated fans for nearly three decades. The iconic red clay of Paris provided a poetic backdrop for Gasquet’s farewell, fitting for someone who had been in the public eye since his childhood.

Gasquet’s enduring legacy lies not in his Grand Slam record, but in the elegance of his game, especially his celebrated one-handed backhand. That single shot, often described as one of the most beautiful in the sport’s history, enthralled fans around the world and cemented his place among tennis's great stylists.

Tennis.com ranked his backhand fifth-best of the Open Era, praising its artistry and grace, placing him in the company of legends such as Federer, Wawrinka, and Henin. It was that stroke, more than titles, that defined his career.

Hailed as a prodigy at a young age, Gasquet was thrust into the spotlight when he appeared on the cover of Tennis Magazine at nine. By twelve, he had already beaten Rafael Nadal at a junior tournament, setting lofty expectations he would grapple with throughout his career.

Though he never managed to defeat Nadal, Federer, or Djokovic consistently, Gasquet carved out a commendable career, winning 16 ATP titles, a Davis Cup, an Olympic medal, and reaching three Grand Slam semifinals. Despite a doping controversy in 2009, which he overcame by proving accidental ingestion, Gasquet remained a fixture in the game, setting a record of ATP match wins in 24 consecutive seasons.

His biographer Franck Ramella reflected on the weight of national expectation that followed Gasquet from his teenage years. France, eager for another male champion since Yannick Noah, placed heavy hopes on him, which he never fully embraced.

He remained content with the path he chose, never claiming to be the next great champion but rather a player who played with joy and finesse. Though he may not have fulfilled every expectation, Gasquet leaves behind a legacy of beauty, perseverance, and quiet distinction in French tennis.
