Rafael Nadal Opens Up on Final Career Chapter Ahead of Netflix Documentary Release

Posted : 21 May 2026

Tennis legend Rafael Nadal has said he aimed to be open and truthful in his upcoming Netflix documentary, which explores the final stages of his career. Speaking at a preview event ahead of its release, the Spaniard emphasized that the series reflects both his achievements and the challenges he faced.

The documentary will be released on May 29 during the French Open, the tournament where Nadal built his extraordinary legacy with a record 14 titles. It will follow his journey during his final season, when he was attempting to return from injury and hip surgery.

Nadal explained that the series does not present an idealised version of his life, but instead shows the reality of his struggles. He noted that it captures moments of doubt, physical setbacks and the difficulty of accepting that he could not return to his previous level.

He said the filming took place during his last competitive year, when he was still trying to make a comeback. Despite his efforts, he admitted he was unable to reach full fitness, marking the beginning of his acceptance that retirement was approaching.

Reflecting on whether sharing such a personal final chapter was necessary, Nadal said the decision was influenced by trusted people around him. He explained that individuals with experience in the industry encouraged him to document his journey in full honesty.

Nadal added that he followed that advice and hopes viewers will connect with the story. The former world No. 1 retired at the end of 2024 after a career that included 22 Grand Slam titles and an emotional farewell at Roland Garros, where his legacy is deeply engraved in tennis history.
