Spanish tennis prospect Rafael Jodar was reprimanded for unsportsmanlike conduct during his fourth-round match against Botic van de Zandschulp at the Shanghai Masters on Wednesday. The 20-year-old lost his temper after missing a break-point opportunity early in the second set, directing an expletive-laden demand for a towel at a ballboy.
The incident occurred shortly after Jodar lost the opening set in a tie-break. Frustrated after sending a shot beyond the baseline, the Spaniard shouted at the court attendant to hand him a towel. Ecuadorian chair umpire Jimmy Pinoargote immediately issued a warning for the outburst, which violated the ATP's code of conduct.
Jodar challenged the decision and explained that he believed his request for a towel had been ignored. However, Pinoargote made it clear that his frustration did not justify the language used towards the ballboy. The umpire told him to make such requests through the official rather than addressing court staff in that manner.
When Jodar questioned what he had said wrong, the umpire declined to repeat the offensive language, reminding the young player that such behaviour was unacceptable. The exchange briefly interrupted the match as Jodar voiced his displeasure with the ruling.
Despite the controversy, Jodar recovered his composure and produced an impressive comeback to win 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2. After dropping the opening set, he raised his level in the next two sets to complete the victory and book his place in the quarter-finals.
The result continues a breakthrough season for Jodar, who has rapidly established himself among the rising talents in men's tennis. Having started the year outside the world's top 150, the Spaniard has made significant progress on the ATP Tour, recording notable victories and strengthening his position among the sport's emerging contenders.
Jodar will next face Norway's Casper Ruud in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals. Ruud advanced after Canadian opponent Felix Auger-Aliassime retired from their fourth-round encounter because of injury. The upcoming match presents Jodar with another major test as he seeks to continue his impressive run in China.
Ballboys and ballgirls play an important role in professional tennis, retrieving loose balls and providing towels to players between points. The incident serves as a reminder that players are expected to treat tournament staff respectfully, even during tense moments in competition.
