Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar is just one victory away from breaking one of the most remarkable records in men’s tennis after reaching the semi-finals of the Canadian Open in Montreal. The 19-year-old defeated France’s Arthur Fils 7-6(7-5), 6-3 to book his place in the last four and climb to No. 11 in the live ATP rankings.
Jodar will next face American Brandon Nakashima, who also reached his first Masters 1000 semi-final after beating Italy’s Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-3. If Jodar wins that contest, he will break into the top 10 unless fellow American Ben Shelton also reaches the final. In that scenario, Jodar would need to defeat Shelton as well to secure a top-10 place.
The Spaniard is chasing a record that has stood for more than four decades. Boris Becker currently holds the mark for the quickest progression from the ATP top 100 into the top 10, achieving the feat in 210 days as an 18-year-old in 1985. Jodar could surpass Becker after only 140 days if he completes the climb in Montreal.
Even if Jodar falls short in Canada, his rapid rise means the record could still be within reach at the Cincinnati Masters or US Open. His progress has already eclipsed the pace of several modern greats, with Carlos Alcaraz taking 336 days to move from the top 100 to the top 10, Novak Djokovic 623 days, Rafael Nadal and Jannik Sinner 735 days each, and Roger Federer 973 days.
Jodar’s Montreal run has also produced several milestones. He became the first teenager since Stefanos Tsitsipas in 2018 to reach the Canadian Open quarter-finals and is the first player born in 2006 or later to reach a Masters 1000 semi-final.
His breakthrough season began with his first ATP Tour title at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech, where he defeated Marco Trungelliti in the final.
The women’s record for the fastest rise from the top 100 to the top 10 stands at 203 days, achieved by Jennifer Capriati in 1990 at just 14 years old. Jodar now has a chance to establish a new benchmark in the men’s game while still only 19.
