Raducanu Stages Comeback to Defeat Kudermetova and Set Up Gauff Clash in Rome

Emma Raducanu delivered a remarkable turnaround to defeat Veronika Kudermetova in three sets at the Italian Open, booking her place in the fourth round where she will face Coco Gauff. After a closely contested first set which Raducanu lost 5-7 despite serving for it, she bounced back emphatically to claim the next two sets 6-0, 6-1.

 

The British player found her rhythm after the early setback, stringing together a streak of eight consecutive games that turned the match on its head.

 

Her composure and movement improved notably as the match progressed, especially on the clay surface where she admitted she was still adjusting. Raducanu's growing confidence was evident in her body language, often celebrating with clenched fists and vocal bursts after key points.

 

 Kudermetova, on the other hand, struggled to maintain her consistency, especially after a crucial moment when a bad bounce left her visibly frustrated and led to a loss of momentum.

 

Raducanu credited her mental strength for the win, saying she was proud of how she managed to regroup after the first set. She maintained focus during a medical timeout taken by her opponent, choosing to stay active and keep hitting balls instead of sitting down.

 

 This decision paid off, as she continued her dominance after the break, eventually sealing the match after capitalizing on another Kudermetova error.

 

Looking ahead to her match against Gauff, Raducanu expressed excitement about testing herself against another former US Open champion. She acknowledged Gauff’s fighting spirit and viewed their upcoming encounter as a valuable opportunity to measure her progress.

 

 Being in the second week of a WTA 1000 tournament marks a significant step forward for Raducanu, who is aiming to rebuild her form and confidence after an injury-plagued spell.
