Qualifier Dayana Yastremska shocks with victory over Azarenka

Posted : 22 January 2024

In a stunning upset at the Australian Open, Ukrainian qualifier Dayana Yastremska displayed remarkable resilience to defeat two-time champion Victoria Azarenka. Yastremska secured a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 victory, marking her first entry into the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam event.

The 23-year-old has been a formidable force, eliminating three top-32 seeded players in the tournament. Meanwhile, Elina Svitolina, the 19th seed, faced an unfortunate end to her match against Linda Noskova due to a back issue, prompting her retirement when trailing 3-0. Noskova advanced to her maiden Grand Slam quarter-final, adding to the surprises in the women's singles draw.

Yastremska's journey at the Australian Open has been characterized by her tenacity, having initially missed direct entry to the main draw. As the top seed in the qualifying event, she navigated through three three-set matches and continued her impressive form in the main draw.

Notable victories over Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova and 27th seed Emma Navarro set the stage for her clash with Azarenka on Rod Laver Arena. Despite facing set points in the opener, Yastremska fought back and displayed unwavering composure in the tie-break to secure the crucial win.

While Yastremska celebrated her historic achievement, Svitolina's bid at the Australian Open came to an abrupt halt due to a back spasm. The Ukrainian, who had been playing well throughout the tournament, expressed sadness at the unexpected turn of events.

Noskova, the Czech teenager, capitalized on the opportunity and advanced into her first Grand Slam quarter-final, maintaining the trend of surprises in the women's singles draw. With experienced players facing challenges, the stage is set for emerging talents like Yastremska and Noskova to make their mark in the latter stages of the tournament.
