Poland overcame Switzerland 2-1 in the United Cup final on Sunday, finally ending the heartbreak of consecutive runner-up finishes in previous editions and capturing their first title in the season-opening mixed-team event.
Hubert Hurkacz played a key role in Poland’s victory, marking an impressive return from nearly seven months out due to injury. Hurkacz defeated veteran Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to level the tie after Iga Swiatek fell 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 to a determined Belinda Bencic in the opening singles match.
The title was ultimately decided in the mixed doubles, where Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski overcame Bencic and Jakub Paul 6-4, 6-3. The win sparked celebrations in Sydney, as Poland finally converted their strong performances into silverware.
Swiatek, reflecting on the victory, said, “We’ve finally made it. Third time lucky. It was a real team effort, and even though my singles results weren’t perfect, the support from everyone kept my spirits high until the end.”
Poland’s path to the final included a notable semifinal victory over defending champions the United States. Hurkacz’s performance will give him momentum heading into his singles campaign at the Australian Open, which starts on 18 January. Meanwhile, Swiatek enters Melbourne Park among the top contenders despite recent losses to Bencic and Coco Gauff.
The contest between Swiatek and Bencic was particularly thrilling. Swiatek jumped to a 3-0 lead in the opening set, but Bencic fought back to win the second set 6-0 and built a 4-1 lead in the decider. After saving two match points at 5-2, Bencic eventually clinched the match, giving Switzerland an early advantage in the final.
In the second singles match, 40-year-old Wawrinka pushed Hurkacz to a third set, showcasing his skill in his final season on tour. Hurkacz, however, held firm, firing 18 aces and saving eight of nine break points to secure the win. Poland then relied on the experience of Kawa and Zielinski to seal the mixed doubles decider and lift the trophy.
