South Africa’s Davis Cup captain, Pietie Norval, has welcomed the news that his team will play Montenegro in the 2026 Davis Cup World Group II playoff, scheduled for February 6–8 on home soil.
Ranked 60th in the world—25 places higher than Montenegro—South Africa will enter the tie as favourites. However, Norval was quick to caution against underestimating their opponents.
“I’m very excited about the draw,” Norval said on Tuesday. “We seem to have been fortunate once again with a home draw, which is extremely exciting. It’s fantastic for the South African public to see the guys play at home again.”
This will mark the team’s third consecutive home tie, a run that Norval believes gives them a valuable advantage. Still, he stressed the importance of thorough preparation.
“On paper, Montenegro don’t seem like one of the stronger teams, but as we’ve learned before, it’s hard to judge until the players arrive and compete,” he explained. “So our preparation will be extremely important, as it has been with the last two ties.”
South Africa will be eager to bounce back after their 4-1 defeat to Morocco earlier this month in Pretoria. Victory over Montenegro would secure their place in World Group II for another year and help rebuild momentum under Norval’s leadership.
