South Africa’s Philip Henning secured the biggest win of his career on Sunday, capturing his first ATP Challenger title at the Rise Centurion Open after a hard-fought victory over Bulgaria’s Alexander Donski in a gripping final.
The match began with Henning asserting early dominance, racing through the opening set 6-2 with confident baseline play. However, Donski, who was also appearing in his first Challenger final, responded strongly in the second set, taking it 6-3 to level the contest and force a decisive set.
With the title on the line, both players battled intensely in a closely contested final-set tiebreak. Henning ultimately held his composure under pressure, edging it 8-6 to clinch the championship and secure his breakthrough ATP title.
The victory marks a major milestone for the South African, who also earns R157,396 in prize money and 50 ATP ranking points, pushing him inside the world’s top 300 for the first time in his career.
Speaking after the win, Henning praised his opponent’s performance and reflected on the significance of the moment, describing it as a special achievement achieved in front of home supporters. He also expressed hope that it would be the first of many titles in his career.
For Donski, the defeat ended a breakthrough week in which he successfully navigated qualifying and reached his first ATP Challenger final, despite falling just short in the deciding moments.
