Jessica Pegula booked her place in the US Open quarter-finals with a commanding straight-sets win over compatriot Ann Li on Sunday. The fourth seed needed less than an hour to secure a 6-1, 6-2 victory, keeping alive her pursuit of a maiden Grand Slam trophy.
The 31-year-old admitted her form had dipped over the summer, highlighted by a disappointing first-round exit at Wimbledon. But on this occasion, she showed sharp focus and precision, breaking Li six times while controlling the baseline exchanges throughout the match. Pegula, who reached the US Open final last year, looked far closer to her best in front of her home crowd.
Speaking after the win, Pegula noted Li’s usual threat when her serve is firing, but she capitalized on her opponent’s nerves in the early stages. “I felt like she came out a little slow and nervous, and I wanted to jump on that right away and not let her get comfortable,” Pegula said.
Despite her world ranking of 58, Li had emerged as one of the tournament’s standout servers, ranking second in aces after three rounds. However, she struggled to find rhythm, committing 10 unforced errors in the opening set and winning only 8% of her second-serve points. Pegula raised her level whenever Li found momentum, mixing powerful baseline play with timely ventures to the net.
“I felt really comfortable moving forward today,” Pegula added. “It doesn’t always feel that natural, but it was working, and I wanted to keep executing until the last game. My team has worked with me a lot on using the net as a weapon instead of just staying back.”
Pegula will now face either Barbora Krejcikova or Taylor Townsend for a place in the semi-finals. Townsend has been one of the surprises of the tournament, eliminating fifth seed Mirra Andreeva and former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko without dropping a set.
