Sinner, Zverev Advance to Paris Masters Quarterfinals

Posted : 31 October 2025

Jannik Sinner cruised past Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 6-1 at the Paris Masters on Thursday, setting up a quarterfinal clash with US fifth seed Ben Shelton. Meanwhile, reigning champion Alexander Zverev advanced with a straight-sets win over Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the third round.

A victory in Paris would see Sinner reclaim the world number one ranking following the early exit of Carlos Alcaraz, who was upset by Cameron Norrie. The 24-year-old Italian has yet to drop a set in the tournament, eyeing a fifth title of the season.

“The first set was very crucial. Francisco is a talented player and it’s difficult to play against him because his level is very high,” Sinner said. “In the second set, I raised my level and I’m very happy to be in the quarter-finals here for the first time.”

Sinner secured the tightly contested first set with a decisive break at 6-5 and dominated the second, racing to a 5-1 lead before closing out the match. Shelton earned his spot in the last eight by defeating Andrey Rublev 7-6 (8/6), 6-3. The 23-year-old will make his ATP Finals debut in Turin this season.

“It’s an accumulation of a year’s work, with ups and downs, great results and setbacks, and having to bounce back,” Shelton said of reaching Turin.

In the day’s final match, Zverev defeated 15th seed Davidovich Fokina 6-2, 6-4 and will now face former world number one Daniil Medvedev, who beat Lorenzo Sonego in three sets. Zverev acknowledged the challenge ahead:

“Daniil is someone I know extremely well and he beats me most of the time. He’s a bit like my kryptonite,” the German said.

Elsewhere, Alexander Bublik overcame Taylor Fritz 7-6 (7/5), 6-2, setting up a quarterfinal against Australian world number six Alex de Minaur, who had earlier beaten Russian 10th seed Karen Khachanov 6-2, 6-2. Bublik admitted the task ahead would be tough:

“I have three matches to go and I would have to beat top-ten players, maybe Jannik in the final—it sounds a bit like a miracle,” he said.

Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime reached the quarterfinals by coming from behind to beat Daniel Altmaier 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The ninth seed is currently one spot shy of securing an ATP Finals berth in Turin but can overtake Lorenzo Musetti with a strong showing in Paris. Auger-Aliassime will next face Valentin Vacherot of Monaco, who recently stunned Cameron Norrie in straight sets after winning the Shanghai Masters earlier this month.

The Paris Masters continues to showcase top-tier tennis as players vie for points and positions ahead of the season-ending ATP Finals.
