Jasmine Paolini made history on Tuesday by becoming the first Italian woman in a decade to reach the semifinals of the Italian Open, defeating Russia’s Diana Shnaider in a hard-fought match. Paolini, currently ranked fifth in the world, triumphed 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-2, marking a major milestone in her career and igniting the home crowd in Rome.
The opening set saw Paolini take a commanding 4-0 lead, only to falter as Shnaider stormed back to win five consecutive games. The 21-year-old Russian then dominated the tiebreak, leaving the Italian needing to regroup after a frustrating turnaround.
Despite the early setback, Paolini refused to back down, showing grit and determination as she responded strongly in the second set.
Trailing 4-0 once again, Paolini launched an impressive comeback, stringing together six straight games to level the match. In the deciding set, she overcame an early break and rallied with the support of the home fans to seal her place in the semifinals.
Her victory makes her the first Italian woman to reach the final four of this WTA 1000 tournament since her doubles partner Sara Errani did so in 2014.
