Jasmine Paolini delivered a heroic performance on Friday to keep Italy’s title defence alive in the Billie Jean King Cup semifinals, defeating Ukraine in Shenzhen.
Trailing 0-1 in the tie and facing a daunting 3-6, 2-4 deficit against Elina Svitolina in the second singles, Paolini staged a remarkable comeback. She rallied to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, pushing the tie into a decisive doubles match.
Following a grueling two-hour and 25-minute singles battle, Paolini had little time to rest before returning to the court alongside Sara Errani.
The reigning Olympic doubles champions dominated Lyudmyla Kichenok and Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 6-3, securing Italy’s place in the BJK Cup final for the third consecutive year. Italy will face either the United States or Great Britain on Sunday.
Errani praised her teammate’s resilience, saying, “It was a tough day for Jasmine. She’s doing an incredible job. It’s not easy to play doubles after a tough singles match, but she’s so strong, and I’m so happy to have her as a doubles partner.”
Paolini had previously lost both encounters against Svitolina this season at the Australian Open and Roland Garros. After dropping the first set 3-6, she fought back from a 2-4 deficit in the second, eventually winning the next four games to level the match.
In the marathon 17-minute second game of the final set, Paolini saved five break points and survived eight deuces to hold serve, later breaking Svitolina and converting her third match point to keep Italy in contention.
Earlier in the day, Marta Kostyuk had given Ukraine an early lead with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Cocciaretto, who staged two remarkable comebacks in Italy’s quarterfinal win over China, was unable to overcome Kostyuk’s dominant play.
Paolini’s efforts, totaling five sets over four hours, were instrumental in extending Italy’s unbeaten run in the competition. With this win, Italy became the first nation to reach three consecutive BJK Cup finals since Czechia achieved the feat from 2014 to 2016.
