Paolini Leads Italy Past China Into Billie Jean King Cup Semifinals

Jasmine Paolini produced a decisive double contribution as defending champions Italy overcame hosts China 2-1 in the Billie Jean King Cup quarter-finals in Shenzhen.

After Zhang Shuai defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-0, 6-2 to give China the lead, Paolini levelled the tie by beating Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 7-6(4).

Paolini then returned to the court alongside Sara Errani for the deciding doubles match. The Italian pair defeated Guo Hanyu and Jiang Xinyu 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in a match that finished close to 1am, sending Italy into the semifinals for the fourth consecutive year.

Italy will face Ukraine in Saturday’s semifinal after Anhelina Kalinina helped her country defeat Belgium 2-1.

Kalinina won her singles match against Jana Otzipka before teaming up with Lyudmyla Kichenok to clinch the deciding doubles point, after Greet Minnen had levelled the tie by defeating world No. 7 Elina Svitolina.
