Jelena Ostapenko, a former French Open champion, criticized the hostile atmosphere at the Qatar Open after being jeered by the crowd during her quarterfinal match against Ons Jabeur, which she won 6-2, 6-2. Despite the partisan crowd support for Jabeur, Ostapenko’s aggressive style of play, featuring four aces and five breaks of serve, proved too much for the Tunisian.
Ostapenko will now face three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek in the semifinal after Swiatek’s 6-2, 7-5 win over Elena Rybakina on Thursday.
While Ostapenko acknowledged that Jabeur is the crowd favorite, she found the crowd's behavior disrespectful, citing disruptive shouting, whistling, and coughing during her service games.
In her post-match press conference, she expressed that such behavior should be addressed in any match, not just for her, and noted that it served to motivate her further.
Despite this, Ostapenko added that she still respected both Jabeur and the crowd, and she felt the negativity pushed her to perform even better during the match.
After her victory, Ostapenko addressed the crowd, acknowledging Jabeur’s importance to Middle Eastern tennis, but also stating that their actions had motivated her to play with more intensity.
The Latvian now leads her head-to-head record against Swiatek 4-0, having last defeated her at the US Open in 2023.
Ostapenko has been in strong form in Doha, following up her 6-2, 6-2 win over fourth seed Jasmine Paolini with another dominant performance against Jabeur.
