Ostapenko Overcomes Slow Start to Defeat Frech

Posted : 07 January 2025

Defending champion Jelena Ostapenko bounced back after a shaky start to defeat Magdalena Frech 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 at the Adelaide International on Tuesday. The Latvian, who won the French Open in 2017, struggled with unforced errors in the first set but raised her level in the following two to secure the win.

Ostapenko will next face Madison Keys, who breezed past Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-2, 6-1 in a dominant display. The victory sets up an exciting clash between the two in the last 16 ahead of the Australian Open.

Keys, fresh off her marriage to coach Bjorn Fratangelo in November, was clinical in her performance, breaking Haddad Maia four times. "I didn't do much wrong – and that doesn't happen very often," Keys said after the match.

Meanwhile, Greek lucky loser Maria Sakkari, returning from a shoulder injury that sidelined her for most of 2024, secured a 6-3, 6-3 win over Czech Linda Noskova. Sakkari expressed optimism about her recovery, stating that each match was helping her regain form.

In other results, Russian Diana Shnaider advanced by defeating Czech qualifier Katerina Siniakova, while American Brandon Nakashima beat Germany's Yannick Hanfmann in the men's draw. Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic also pulled off an upset, knocking out Kazakh sixth seed Alexander Bublik. The tournament is heating up as players gear up for the upcoming Australian Open.
