Jelena Ostapenko was involved in a fiery on-court exchange after she and Marcelo Arévalo defeated Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Laura Siegemund to reach the Wimbledon mixed doubles semi-finals.
The second seeds secured a 6-4, 7-6 victory in a closely contested quarter-final, but the drama continued long after the final point as both teams argued over time violation calls made during the decisive second-set tie-break.
The controversy centred on Laura Siegemund, who received consecutive time violations from the chair umpire late in the match. One of the penalties resulted in the loss of her first serve at a crucial stage, leaving the German and her partner frustrated with the officiating.
After the match, Roger-Vasselin questioned the umpire's decision, insisting the timing penalties were unfair given the importance of the moment. Siegemund also voiced her disagreement before a tense exchange developed at the net.
Ostapenko entered the discussion and defended the umpire's actions, suggesting players should accept the outcome rather than blame the officiating.
"You can take the loss a bit better, learn how to lose," the Latvian told her opponents.
Roger-Vasselin rejected the accusation and argued that Siegemund had not deliberately delayed play. Ostapenko disagreed, claiming the issue had been ongoing throughout the match.
"Somebody is not afraid to say something when she's taking two minutes between serves and before serving. Everyone knows this," Ostapenko said.
Roger-Vasselin responded by insisting Siegemund had remained within the time limits during the contest and questioned why the violations were enforced at such a critical point in the tie-break.
Ostapenko maintained that the chair umpire had simply applied the rules and noted that she had also received time warnings in previous matches when she exceeded the allowed time between points.
The tense discussion continued for several minutes before both teams eventually left Centre Court. The exchange quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the Wimbledon mixed doubles tournament.
Despite the controversy, Ostapenko and Arévalo advanced to the semi-finals and remain in contention for the title. The pair will next face third seeds Christian Harrison and Shuai Zhang for a place in the championship match.
The victory keeps alive Ostapenko's hopes of adding another Grand Slam doubles title to her career, while Arévalo continues his impressive run across the doubles competitions. However, their impressive performance was largely overshadowed by the heated disagreement that followed one of the tournament's most dramatic mixed doubles encounters.
