Naomi Osaka and Victoria Azarenka, both former world number ones, progressed to the second round of the Bad Homburg Open on Monday, as they continue their preparations for Wimbledon. Osaka battled through two tie-breaks to defeat Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (7/4), while Azarenka secured a more straightforward 6-2, 6-2 win over Germany’s Laura Siegemund. The tournament serves as a key warm-up event ahead of the Grand Slam on grass later this month.
Osaka, making her return to the grass-court season after maternity leave, fired 16 aces in a tense two-hour match filled with powerful serves and narrow margins. After coming back from a 4-2 deficit in the first-set tie-break, the Japanese star showed resilience and precision, eventually sealing the win with a forehand on her second match point. Reflecting on the victory, Osaka said, "It’s my first grass-court win of the year, so I’m really excited about that." She will now face fifth seed Emma Navarro of the United States in the next round.
Azarenka, a two-time Australian Open champion, entered the main draw as a qualifier and quickly imposed herself against Siegemund, dropping just four games in total. Her next opponent will be world number one Iga Swiatek, promising a much sterner test. Meanwhile, last year’s runner-up Donna Vekic avenged her final loss to Diana Shnaider with a 6-3, 6-3 win and will take on Linda Noskova next, after the Czech defeated Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets.
As the tournament progresses, the performances of these seasoned and rising stars on grass offer a preview of the form they will carry into Wimbledon. For Osaka, the win marks a confidence boost as she looks to reclaim her place among the top contenders in the sport.
