Ons Jabeur voices support for WTA finals in Saudi Arabia despite opposition

Posted : 07 March 2024

Tunisia's Ons Jabeur expressed her support for the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) potentially moving the WTA Finals to Saudi Arabia, despite notable opposition from tennis legends Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.

Jabeur, stating that she has seen positive developments in the country during her visits, believes it's time to give female tennis players the opportunity to compete in Saudi Arabia and acknowledges the evolving rights for women there.

The debate surrounding the event's location has intensified, with the WTA yet to make a decision on the 2024 Finals, taking into account human rights concerns and discussions with various groups.

The WTA's potential move to Saudi Arabia has drawn attention from human rights advocates, especially after suspending tournaments in China over concerns about Peng Shuai. WTA chief Steve Simon emphasized that no decision has been finalized, and discussions on the matter continue.

Saudi Arabia has made significant investments in various sports, but critics argue that the country uses sports to divert attention from human rights and equality issues. Despite allegations of human rights abuses, Saudi Arabia maintains that its laws protect national security.

Jabeur, a three-time Grand Slam finalist and the first Arab woman to enter the top 10, is set to face American Katie Volynets in the second round at Indian Wells.
