Nigerian tennis prodigy Oluwaseun Ogunsakin made a spectacular debut at the Roland Garros Junior Championships on Thursday. The gifted 17-year-old tennis star cruised into the final round of the qualifying series after defeating French home favorite Lenny Couturier in straight sets. The historic victory marks a groundbreaking milestone for Nigerian tennis on the grand international stage.
The Ekiti-born athlete delivered a highly composed and dominant baseline performance to secure a 6-2, 6-4 victory over his French opponent. Ogunsakin settled down very quickly on the Parisian clay court, effectively reducing his unforced errors while dictating heavy rallies from the back of the court. He broke Couturier's serve twice in the opening set to comfortably take the early advantage.
The second set proved to be a far more competitive affair as Couturier fought back fiercely in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. However, Ogunsakin remained completely unphased under intense pressure, matching his opponent point for point during several long, grueling rallies. The rising African talent produced crucial baseline winners and earned a decisive late service break to wrap up the match in 90 minutes.
With this memorable victory, Ogunsakin becomes the first-ever Nigerian player to compete and win a match in the Roland Garros Juniors qualifying tournament. The high-flying youngster is currently enjoying a remarkable rise on the International Tennis Federation junior circuit. He recently won the prestigious ITF J200 Africa Regional Championship in Cairo, Egypt, by defeating Botswana's Ntugamili Raguin.
Ogunsakin entered the clay-court tournament with a strong 68 percent win rate on the surface, having won 13 of his last 19 matches. He will discover his final qualifying round opponent on Friday afternoon as he aims to make the main tournament draw. The historic junior event runs alongside the main French Open competition in Paris.
