Ogunsakin Takes Ranking Boost From US Open Junior Campaign

Nigeria’s teenage tennis sensation Seun Ogunsakin has emerged from the 2026 US Open Junior Championships with valuable ranking points and high-level experience despite suffering defeats in both the singles and doubles events.

The 17-year-old put up a strong fight in the boys’ singles before losing to South Africa’s Connor Doig 2-6, 6-4, 3-6 in the round of 32 on Wednesday at Court 14 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Flushing Meadows, New York.

Ogunsakin’s singles campaign had earlier seen him navigate two qualifying matches before advancing through the opening round of the main draw, giving him valuable exposure against some of the world’s leading junior players.

His singles run earned him about 60 ITF Junior ranking points, providing a significant boost to his position on the global junior circuit.

The Nigerian had also competed in the boys’ doubles, partnering Ntungamili Raguin, but the pair were eliminated in the round of 32 after losing 3-6, 4-6 to the sixth-seeded combination of Yannick Theodore Alexandrescou and Ryo Tabata.

Despite the early doubles exit, Ogunsakin collected another 30 ITF Junior ranking points from his appearance in the main draw.

The back-to-back exits therefore ended his US Open campaign on a disappointing note, but the ranking points and experience gained from competing at the final junior Grand Slam of the year could prove valuable as he continues his development.

Ogunsakin is now expected to turn his attention to premium J300 and J500 junior tournaments around the world for the remainder of the season.

With his latest points haul added to his tally, the Nigerian youngster will be hoping to use the experience of New York as a springboard for further progress on the international junior circuit.
