Ogunsakin Seals Wimbledon Juniors Main Draw Spot with Dominant Qualifying Win

Posted : 05 July 2026

Nigerian youngster Seun Ogunsakin has booked his place in the main draw of the Wimbledon Junior Championships after an impressive straight-sets victory over Canada's Benjamin Azar.

Ogunsakin delivered a commanding performance to defeat Azar 6-3, 6-1 in the qualifying round, earning the opportunity to compete at one of the world's most prestigious Grand Slam tournaments.

His qualification marks another major milestone for Nigerian tennis, which has witnessed steady progress in recent years through increased investment in talent development and grassroots programmes.

The feat also comes amid a resurgence of the sport in Nigeria, following the country's historic promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II earlier this year.

Team Nigeria secured the landmark achievement with a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in Lagos, ending a wait of nearly three decades.

The Davis Cup tie also signalled the return of top-level international tennis to Nigeria for the first time in 19 years, highlighting the renewed growth and visibility of the sport.

Officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC) described Ogunsakin's achievement as another indication that ongoing efforts to reposition Nigerian sports are producing positive results.

Under the leadership of NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade, the Commission has continued to support athlete development and create opportunities for young talents to excel on the international stage.

The NSC congratulated Ogunsakin and the Nigeria Tennis Federation on the achievement, expressing confidence that the young player will make Nigeria proud at Wimbledon while reaffirming its commitment to producing more world-class athletes across different sports.

Ogunsakin's qualification for the Wimbledon Junior Championships reflects the continued progress of Nigerian tennis and the success of efforts to develop emerging talent. His achievement further strengthens optimism about the future of the sport as Nigeria continues to make its presence felt on the international stage.
