Success Ogunjobi narrowly missed out on the women’s singles title but bounced back to secure the women’s doubles crown at the 2026 Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Open National Tennis Championship in Abuja.
The 47th edition of the championship concluded at the tennis courts of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, where Etoro Bassey rallied from a set down to defeat Ogunjobi 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 in an entertaining women’s singles final.
Ogunjobi enjoyed an outstanding run to the final, beginning with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory over Bunmi Are in the Round of 32 before defeating Gloria Samuel 6-0, 6-3 in the Round of 16.
She continued her impressive form by beating Mary Udofa 6-2, 6-0 in the quarter-finals and produced one of the tournament’s biggest upsets in the semi-finals, eliminating top seed Khadijat Mohammed 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
However, Bassey recovered brilliantly after dropping the opening set to claim the singles title.
The champion began her campaign with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Khadijat Salami before overcoming Mary Azi 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 16.
She then defeated Nenrot Suwa 6-1, 6-0 in the quarter-finals and edged Bright Emmanuel-Essien 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 in a hard-fought semi-final to book her place in the title decider.
Ogunjobi, however, ended the championship on a winning note by partnering with Khadijat Mohammed to capture the women’s doubles title.
The pair defeated Etoro Bassey and Favour James 6-2, 6-7(2), 10-6 in a thrilling final.
Speaking after her singles triumph, Bassey praised Ogunjobi for a spirited performance and expressed her determination to continue improving.
“She is a very good player and she gave me a tough time.
“Even when my backhand was not working well, I remained focused and accepted the challenge.
“I am happy with my progress, and winning at this level means a lot to me.
“I want to keep improving, keep winning titles, and ultimately pursue a professional tennis career,” she said.
The championship, which ran from June 12 to June 21, featured men’s and women’s singles and doubles events, as well as wheelchair tennis competitions, attracting many of Nigeria’s top players.
