Ogualu Defies Gloria Samuel to Win NNPC-SNEPCo Girls’ U-16 Title

Nigerian-born, Netherlands-based Emmanuella Ogualu produced a strong comeback story at the NNPC-SNEPCo Junior Tennis Championship, winning the Girls’ U-16 title after defeating top seed Gloria Samuel 9-7 in a tense final. The championship was held at the refurbished Mainland Tennis Club inside the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

Ogualu had entered the competition as part of her preparations for international junior ranking tournaments. Her campaign suffered an early setback when Samuel defeated her 9-4 in their final round-robin group match, leaving Ogualu to finish second in the group.

The defeat did not end Ogualu’s challenge. She recovered to defeat Bisola Ogunkolade, the winner of Group B, in the cross-semifinals and earned a rematch with Samuel in the championship match.

Ogualu looked more comfortable in the final and used aggressive placements to take control. Seven aces helped her establish a 7-3 advantage in the pro-set before Samuel launched a spirited fightback.

Samuel reduced the deficit to 7-8 and appeared capable of completing another comeback. Ogualu held her nerve, however, and secured the final game to win 9-7 and complete her turnaround from the group-stage defeat.

The Girls’ U-14 final also produced a dramatic contest. Top seed Adesinmi Olayinka surrendered an 8-3 advantage as Chisimdi Afam Mbonu mounted a determined fightback, but Olayinka eventually used her fresher legs to win the decisive tiebreak and claim the match.

There was also success for the Afaramai brothers. Godwin Afaramai of Police College Tennis Club won the Boys’ U-12 title after defeating Divine Ezaka, while his elder brother Heman captured the Boys’ U-16 crown with a 9-5 victory over Damilola Agunbiade of Calabar Sports Club. Abuja-based Goodluck Tersoo won the Boys’ U-14 title after beating Daniel Igbinovia 9-5.

Chimdiuto Obiora won the Girls’ U-12 category by defeating Ibadan-based Venus Babalola. Obiora and Godwin Afaramai were subsequently named the tournament’s most outstanding players.

Former Nigerian national champion Rolake Olagbegi attended the finals as special guest of honour. The former Africa Games medallist praised the standard of the young players and expressed confidence that continued development could produce future Nigerian stars.
