The Nigeria Rugby League Association (NRLA) has taken significant steps to enhance standards across the sport through strategic appointments aimed at boosting performance, officiating, and long-term development.
At the center of the restructuring is Luke Shearman, appointed as Director of High Performance, International Teams, and Competitions. Formerly the assistant coach of the women’s national team, Shearman now oversees Nigeria’s national team programs, high-performance systems, international competitions, and player development pathways.
Shearman’s role will bridge grassroots participation and elite performance, ensuring a sustainable structure for talent identification and progression nationwide.
In addition to Shearman’s appointment, the NRLA has strengthened support for national teams and match officials. New Zealand international Njavada George has been named mentor to the women’s national team, expected to enhance technical knowledge, confidence, and international exposure for female players.
Globally respected Australian referee Ashley Klein has been appointed referee mentor. Klein, who officiated multiple National Rugby League (NRL) Grand Finals in 2018, 2022, and 2024, brings elite-level experience to raise refereeing standards in Nigeria.
Further emphasizing inclusivity, the NRLA confirmed Tara Jones as a key figure supporting the growth and participation of women referees, aligning with broader efforts to expand opportunities for women across all areas of the sport.
Announcing the appointments, the NRLA described the changes as a milestone in its long-term vision. “These appointments reflect our commitment to world-class systems, professional governance, and sustainable success,” the association stated. “They position Nigeria Rugby League to lead development efforts across Africa while competing confidently on the global stage.”
With these strategic changes, the NRLA aims to strengthen performance, elevate officiating standards, and accelerate the growth of rugby league across Nigeria.
