Novak Djokovic Wins China Open After De Minaur Retires

Posted : 07 October 2026

Novak Djokovic secured another historic milestone on Tuesday after winning the China Open final when Alex de Minaur was forced to retire with an injury. The Serbian had taken the opening set 7-6 (7/3) and was trailing 0-1 in the second when the Australian ended the contest.

The victory gave Djokovic his seventh China Open crown and extended his perfect record in Beijing to 34 wins from 34 matches. It was also the 39-year-old’s 102nd ATP singles title, moving him within one of Roger Federer’s Open Era total and behind only Jimmy Connors.

The final was closely fought from the start, with both players producing a physical battle that lasted more than an hour. Djokovic eventually edged the opening-set tiebreak as de Minaur’s errors increased, before both players required medical attention.

De Minaur returned for the second set with his left thigh heavily strapped and managed to win the opening game. However, the Australian soon decided he could not continue, bringing the final to an abrupt end. He apologised to the spectators afterward and expressed disappointment that the match had finished in such circumstances.

Djokovic admitted that the circumstances were not the way he wanted to win the title, but he was pleased to finish a difficult year on a high. The Serbian has dealt with physical problems during the season and said his main objective in Beijing was to rediscover his best feeling on court.

His run to the title was particularly impressive given the quality of his opponents. Djokovic defeated Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals before reaching the final after Daniil Medvedev was disqualified in the semifinals for accidentally hitting a spectator with a ball.

The Beijing triumph also means Djokovic has now won at least one singles title in every season for 21 consecutive years, extending his record in men's tennis.
